obligatory question mark goes here ?
The link is to a blog belonging to the editorial staff of the “Young people” part of the local Swedish paper Norrköpings Tidningar (NT).
After the furry documentary shown on Swedish channel 5, which included interviews with a big cat therian, a lot of Swedish blogs have been making fun of “species surgery” and similar ideas.
I can understand chocked teenagers just being able to say: “What the … fuck?”. I can take some jokes. I know that some people are just plain stupid and ignorant. But this blog is owned and written by the editorial staff for a newspaper. For most of the post they write about a future scenario, about all the silly things that would happen if people would be able to change species… that’s not so bad.
But they shouldn’t get away with this (my translation):
I will not be that old, gray and grumpy old woman who harbours contempt and anger towards my grandchild when he acknowledges that he or she during the greater part of his life felt out of place as a human being, but however, has developed a great desire to be an anteater. No, I won’t shake my head or faint. I’ll just sit there, smile, be responsive and serve my grandchild army ants containing a dash of arsenic.
(Bolding by me)
Here it’s not even a person who as actually turned into an animal with sci-fi magic tricks, but just a person who admits that they feel like a non-human animal. It seems like that, in the author’s mind, serves this cruel “joke”?
Yeah… I know this seems like a very local thing. But if any of you lovely tumblr otherkin would take your time and contact the newspaper either at webben@nt.se or ungnt@nt.se, it would make this Swedish therian very happy. They will understand English (and of course Swedish), but remember to put the link to the actual editorial blog for them to understand what you’re talking about.
… Or am I being overly sensitive?
A new novel directly aimed at nonhumans - though a thoughtful spiritual adventure story for all people - has just been released, by Ashlyn Nafina. To Dream, Perchance To Soar is the story of a young Parisian girl who will do anything to slip her human skin and gain the wings that she feels should be there… but, caught in the middle of changing times, she finds that her responsibilities are much larger than this. Coping with her own changes and the changes in society, she finds that she will have to test the limits of the world around her… on the level of society, and the level of the spiritual.
Soar is a novel that was written by a nonhuman, and had editing and “reality checking” from a number of people in the otherkin community. Spiritually and physically, it tries to be close to the reality of the experience for nonhumans while also offering an adventure in a fascinating new world. The book features a whole new invented language for the fictional Ka’aulele, as well as script and poetry in that language, and aims to be based on strong metaphysical ideas while not sacrificing the story.
I have watched this book grow from beginning to end and, like many other people who shared their thoughts as it grows, I definitely can say it matches up to other young adult novels out there, even being selfpublished, and it also does what very few other books do, and reflects the otherkin experience. The author hopes that it will speak to people on many levels, on the nonhuman level, on the level of a metaphor for transgender identity as Aile tries to find the body and place in society that is right for her, and as a story of the power of wonder and change.
You can buy the print book here with free shipping until December 6 using the code, SLEIGHRIDES. The ebook version should be out in about 1 week.
Signal boosting here. (:
your jokes are incredibly boring and overused, ha ha youre the brave little toaster, a car, dang thats really clever
oh youre an animal isnt it wrong to eat other animals
animals cant use the internet, ect.
like, really i think ive heard them all
youve proved your point that you think our choice of identity is laughable and youre never going to take our community seriously
thats really good for you and im not going to try to tchange your opinions!! but dang just
go away
“our choice of identity” if you’re CHOOSING it, don’t have a fucking chip on your shoulder. If you’re CHOOSING it, deal with the hate you get.
People who REALLY don’t deserve the hate they get:
- transgendered
- gay/lesbian
- people with actual deformities
PEOPLE WHO SHOULD BE JUDGEDif you choose something deal with consequences. Don’t take it out on anyone else.
- people who complain about the hate they get for THEIR choice.
It’s not a choice. :/

http://otherkinask.tumblr.com/ wants you send an ask with your species, as they are composing a binder of all otherkin and which species are more common than others. If you are willing, you can specify that you want them to include your username on Tumblr, so that fellow ‘kin may contact you. However, you can remain completely anonymous if you want to.

I will be adding more as I progress and find more resources. I hope these are helpful.
I was lying down for a nap, and this place came to me in my mind… I felt it wanted to be shared, and that it could be made as part of a meditation to help ‘kin find their selves, or see their selves more clearly. Or, just as a place for your spirit to rest and be, that will accept you.
In my beliefs, if a space is used by a lot of people then it gains shared energy. If many ‘kin use this space, then I think it will become a beautiful space for all of us to come. You might even be able to meet friends here.
Note: The first time, this meditation will work better if you do not read it first, but, have someone else to read it to you. After you do this, you should be able to go here on your own when you wish.
If you are reading to someone, it is best to use a slow, gentle voice, like you are soothing a child. This will help the meditation.
You begin, in a sacred place. A simple place: maybe a forest grove, an open space on the plains or in the mountains, or a side alley that seems to appear only to your eyes. It could be anywhere. All that you know, is that it looks like an ordinary place, maybe a place you know… but magic echoes here, magic that is meant particularly for you.
In front of you, there is an entrance. An archway, a doorway, or some kind of path, or portal, or hole. Through the entrance, you can see ten stairs leading down, down into the dark. There is a gentle glow that seems to comfort and encourage you, a soft light that seems to guide the path, and you know by instinct that not matter how far down you go, that light will always guide your steps, down those ten stairs, and beyond.
You feel comforted. You feel ready. You feel full of magic and light, and so curious to see what waits for you at the bottom, because it feels like something is calling you there. So you take a deep breath and step down to the top step, the 10th step. You feel it beneath your feet. Is it warm or cold? Can you feel the dust and rough texture of stone, or the smooth patterns of magical carvings? Take a moment to feel it with your toes, to really feel the ground under you. And notice, how the world becomes a little lighter, a little softer, as you take that first step. (Reader should pause here)
When you are ready, take a deep breath, and step down the the 9th step. Here with your feet on the 9th step, the twin darkness and light of the pathway surrounds you a little more. You might see balls of faerie light, or hear an echo of voices or sounds in the distance. What do you feel right now, hearing and seeing these things? Excited, afraid, calm? Do you want to know more about them? (Pause) But they are still faint right now, you can still feel the breeze of the outside air on your skin.
So you take a deep breath, and step down to the 8th step. Here, the outside world is a little quieter, and the echoes inside the walls are a little clearer. You feel peace with the temperature here. Is it warm or cold? Is the air moving or is it still? You take a moment to notice the air around you, and how it feels different from the outside. (Pause)
Then you take a deep breath, and step down to the 7th step. You can hear the voices calling you, and the outside world seeming to slip away just a little… What are they calling? Are they speaking voices? Are they animal howls? Is it a song? Does it sound happy or sad? (Pause) You want to follow the voices, you know they have something to tell you. You want to be closer to them, to your kind.
So you take a deep breath, and step down to the 6th step. The air down here has an interesting taste… like something you remember, from a long time ago. Every time you take a breath, you feel that some ancient knowledge is sinking deeper and deeper into your bones. You spend some moments just tasting the air, smelling it, trying to remember where this scent belongs. (Pause)
When you are ready, you take a deep breath, and step down to the 5th step. It’s getting darker here now, but brighter at the same time. You feel like you don’t need to look at the steps down to know your way. You feel that your feet are being guided by a caring force. The soft glow of the light is all around you, and seems to be even going through you, making you feel less like your old body, more like something new. You notice the light, you notice the color, how it feels inside you. (Pause)
You take a deep breath, and step down to the 4th step. You can hear again, the sounds in the distance, so clear now, echo all through the walls. And through you. The whole place is full of light and sound, and at the same time, it is so quiet and peaceful. All the sounds are so beautiful. You feel like time could stop here, and your body could melt away. (Pause)
You take a deep breath, and step down to the 3rd step. So deep. You can almost see the ground now, and you begin to hear the voices of other people in the chamber in front of you. Other beings, who have come here for meditation with you. You feel a sense of peace with them, you know they are all here for the same purpose. You want to join them, but at the same time, you are happy in this moment. This moment is perfect. (Pause)
But you know you must continue down, taking a deep breath, and down to the 2nd step. You are surrounded now by the air of the cave, its scent, its gentle sound. The temperature of the cave is so natural to you, and the sounds you hear are so comforting and familiar. Just listen to them for a moment, let them soothe your soul. Let them fill your soul. Let your soul reach out to them. (Pause)
And then, when you are ready, take a deep breath, and step down to the 1st step. So calm, so peaceful here. You can feel the peace and calm all around you. You can feel your pure spirit shining, and the spirits of everyone around you shining, too. The whole place is shining with a pure, gentle energy, and you are light as air, clear as your soul.
Breathe in, and breathe light into your body. Breathe out, and breathe out all of your pain, to transform in the light.
Breathe in. Breathe out.
(Repeat a few times, slowly)
(Pause)
When you are ready, take a deep breath, and step down to the floor. You see that a great hall is ahead, lit by a soft, gentle, glowing light. It does not come from candles or electricity, it seems to come from the stone, and it feels very pure. All around you are other souls, but they will not interrupt you unless you choose to talk to them, they all are on their own journey. There is an atmosphere of peace, and the search of knowledge, as if you are in a great library, or university. But this place feels much more old and pure than any human building.
In the great hall ahead, you see a large stone in the center of the room. It is carved with many beautiful images, glowing and shining as if they are made of stained glass, or crystal, or light. In the center of the stone is a large carving of a being. As you walk closer you recognise the being, the shape and the body of this species. It reminds you of your deepest soul.
Walk closer. Reach out and touch the carving, see it glow. Notice the colors. Feel the energy that runs through it, and feel that energy through you. What is the being? Spend some time with this carving, think about what it means to you. Take your time, give a signal when you are ready to move on.
(Let the person who is meditating take as long as they want.)
Now let your eyes explore the other carvings on this stone. Let your sight, and touch, and soul guide you to the ones that speak most to you. Touch them, know them, listen to their stories. (Short pause, let the person explore this) What are they? What do they mean to you? What are the themes of these stories? Take your time, give a signal when you are ready to move on.
(When the person gives a signal) This is a place of great knowledge. It is the Hall of All Souls. You have traveled here to learn your true self, and the carvings on the stone are a window to your self. The people here are also learning about their selves. Look around you now, see them all in their true forms. (Pause and let the person look around) And you as well, look down, look at your self. This is how you look to the people here. In the Hall of All Souls, there are no masks. There is only truth. (Pause)
You can come here any time to explore, or just to have peace. Everyone here accepts you for who you are. You can study the carvings, and there are many other wonders to find here too. But right now, you have learned a lot, and it is time to just let that knowledge go deep, deep into your soul. Take a deep breath, and breathe in knowledge. (Pause)
When you are ready, turn back towards the steps, and slowly begin to walk back up, up to the outside world. Take a deep breath, and step up to the 1st step. Feel the step under your feet, feel the weight in your body just a little more. Take a deep breath, and step up to the 2nd step. Feel the world getting a little brighter as the light outside flows in… Take a deep breath, and step up to the 3rd step. Feel the tingling feelings on your skin fading away as your body slowly comes back to you. Take a deep breath, step up to the 4th step… You can begin to hear the sounds of the outside world again… the sounds of the hall are fading away. Take a deep breath, and step up to the 5th step. Feel the step under your feet, feel how your body takes the weight. Feel the life coming back into your body. Take a deep breath, and step up to the 6th step. The air is starting to taste more like the outside, you can feel it on your skin, you can feel it in your hair… Take a deep breath, and step up to the 7th step. You can almost see the outside world now, you can feel the steps under your feet, you can hear the world starting to come back to your ears. Take a deep breath, and step up to the 8th step. Feel the outside air in your lungs. You can feel your body coming back to you. Take a deep breath, and step up to the 9th step. The place you started is in front of you now, you are almost there again. Take a deep breath, and step up to the 10th step. You are back where you started, you are back in your body. Take one last step to the land where you begin, and when you are ready, open your eyes…
After you did this meditation, the idea will be, that you always can return here, to meditate or pray or learn from the carvings and the other people. When you have created this as a place in your mind, it will be there for you any time.
I hope some people find this useful! ^v^
